One day, Asano was very angry. He drew his sword and attacked Kira. This was a crime in the palace. The shogun ordered Asano to die. He committed seppuku – he killed himself with a knife.

Asano’s samurai became ronin. They had no master. They wanted revenge for their lord’s death. Oishi was their leader. He made a plan. He said, “We must wait. We must be careful.” They waited for nearly two years.

Oishi pretended to be a bad man. He went to bad places. He sent his wife away. He wanted Kira’s spies to think he was not dangerous. Kira felt safe.

On a snowy night in December 1702, the 47 ronin attacked Kira’s mansion. They fought hard. They found Kira hiding in a wood store. Oishi asked Kira to commit seppuku. Kira was afraid and did not. Oishi cut off his head.

The ronin took the head to Lord Asano’s grave. Then the government arrested them. They were ordered to commit seppuku. All 46 ronin died with honor. Their graves are next to their master’s grave.
