Mountains are high places on Earth. The Earth’s crust moves up and makes mountains. Some mountains are volcanoes. Hot rock comes out. Mount Everest is very high – 8,850 metres.
Living in mountains is not easy. There are no big roads. People use animals to carry things. They grow food on terraces. Rice grows in water.
Many animals live in mountains. Golden eagles fly high and eat small animals. Snow leopards have thick fur. Alpacas live in South America. They have warm fur, too.
Plants in mountains are special. Conifers have small needles. Very high up, trees cannot live. Small plants have long roots to find water. Some plants have buds under the snow.
Glaciers are rivers of ice. Snow falls, makes ice, and moves slowly. Crevasses are holes in ice – they are dangerous. Avalanches are very dangerous – snow falls fast.
In summer, people climb mountains. They wear helmets. Mountain biking and rafting are fun. In winter, people ski, snowboard, walk on snowshoes, or sled. Sleds go very fast – 140 km/h in the Olympics.
Be careful in mountains. Take warm clothes, water, food, a map, and a compass. Have fun, but stay safe.
